DNA Extraction from Kiwi Fruit

A simple protocol to see and touch real DNA.

A simple protocol to see and touch real DNA:

- cut the kiwi (1/2 big or 1 small) into small pieces
- take the table salt, the washing-up liquid, and the distilled water and mix it well in a beaker
- add the chopped kiwi
- wait for 10 minutes
- blend the mixture (with a blender) for exactly 5 seconds
- filter the mixture into a second beaker
- add 10 drops of protease (meat tenderizer or contact lens cleaning liquid) and mix
- pour 20 ml of the filtrate into a large test tube
- very carefully pour ice-cold ethanol (95%) down the side of the tube to form a layer on top of the kiwi extract
- collect the filaments of DNA wrapping them around a inoculation loop.
