Science for Poets

Science for Poets is a teaching model that uses literature (story books) as a base for integrating the teaching of mathematics, science and technology.

Science for Poets is a teaching model that uses literature as a base for integrating the teaching of mathematics, science and technology. The model was developed by teachers for teachers in 1993 in order to implement activity-based learning in the classroom and at the same time promote science and technology.

This teaching model uses a process called SPICE. The SPICE process follows a series of steps, starting with choosing and reading a favorite classroom storybook. Through group discussions the Situation in the story is isolated. The Problem Statement is identified, followed by a brainstorming session that links math, science and technology concepts to the problem. The students select the best idea and Investigate what is needed for the Construction Activity that will help solve the problem. The results are discussed and Evaluated.

The integration of cross-curricular competencies is one of the driving forces in Quebec's new Education Reform. Science for Poets, a hands-on model for teaching science and technology, introduces elementary and secondary teachers to the use of literature as an integrating tool. It is a fun way for students to learn science concepts.
